Nabu Casa’s origins

Nabu Casa was established in 2018 by the founders and core contributors of Home Assistant. At the time, many of the project's lead developers were balancing demanding day jobs with the relentless pace of open-source development in their free time.

To ensure the future of the project, they created Nabu Casa, and began creating products that help people make the most of Home Assistant, using the profits to fund its development. Nabu Casa is independently owned; our community makes our work possible, not VCs or private equity.

Home Assistant

We fund Home Assistant's development

Today, Home Assistant is owned by the Open Home Foundation, a non-profit driving forward Home Assistant and many other open-source projects. Nabu Casa is the official provider of Home Assistant products and services. Every subscription and purchase directly funds the ongoing development of Home Assistant by giving the majority of its profits to the Open Home Foundation. The foundation and Nabu Casa share the belief that the smart home should be private, locally controlled, and sustainable.

This is us

Meet the Nabu Casa team

Paulus Schoutsen

Paulus is the founder of Home Assistant, and one of the co-founders of Nabu Casa. He sees Home Assistant as the key to the open and private home that everyone deserves. Since 2013, he has grown Home Assistant from a script turning on the lights at sunset into one of the major smart home platforms.

Pascal Vizeli

Pascal is the founder of Home Assistant OS, and one of the co-founders of Nabu Casa. The OS he started is still powering a large majority of the community's Home Assistant setups, including Nabu Casa's own devices.

Ben Bangert

Ben is a software engineer, best known for his open-source work creating Python libraries such as Pylons, Beaker, Routes, and Kazoo. He got interested in home automation and began contributing to Home Assistant by starting a core rewrite to async.

Ashton Lafferty

Ashton has been a long-time community member of Home Assistant and the first member of the support team at Nabu Casa. For years, he has been helping people troubleshoot things and get started with Home Assistant.

Joakim Sørensen

Joakim has been a core contributor to Home Assistant for years, working on the Supervisor panel and parts of the frontend. He is best known as the creator of the Home Assistant Community Store (HACS).

Jacqueline Raaflaub

Jacqueline has her roots in software and hardware support, and she always looks forward to helping our community get into the exciting world of Home Assistant.

Uwe Bernitt

Uwe is a product guy and hobby tinkerer, on a mission to make Home Assistant hardware even better. He is proud of once having led the adblockers' day-to-day trench warfare against a desperate multi-billion-dollar industry that couldn't accept what smart people called "the biggest boycott in human history". He enjoys traveling, hosting strangers at home, and heavy metal festivals.

Pierre Clement

Pierre is a curious and passionate developer and DevOps engineer with a love for music, sports, photography, open source and, of course, home automation. Privacy is one of his biggest concerns, and he joined the infrastructure team with that in mind.

Melanie Vizeli

Melanie works in the back office as the CFO's Financial Clerk, writing invoices, processing transactions and keeping our bookkeeping up to date. Outside work, she is an enthusiastic user of the smart home her husband built.

Keith Burzinski

Keith has a deep personal interest in all things tech. He tinkered with electronics as a kid, moved into computer systems and network infrastructure, and spent years as a sysadmin before landing in DevOps and SRE. Some part-time tinkering with embedded development led him to Home Assistant and ESPHome, and his contributions there brought him to Nabu Casa.

Andy Gill

Andy is a home automation enthusiast, open-source fan, aviation geek, and DIY'er. He discovered the smarter home by installing cameras that alerted him while traveling, then started automating with a doorbell and grew from there. After a diverse aviation career spanning field engineering, support, sales, and product management, he now helps develop Nabu Casa's relationship with businesses.

Krisjanis Lejejs

Krisjanis is known to friends as the smart home guy, the tinkerer and the person to call about anything computer-related. He found Home Assistant and embedded devices in his teens and is an avid self-hoster. He brings experience in cloud services and full-stack development to the infrastructure team.

Carl-Olof Albertsson

Carl is VP of Commercial at Nabu Casa. A lifelong interest in IT and gaming turned into a passion for home automation after starting a family, and his career has centered on building strong customer journeys, implementing Zendesk across industries and leading IT support teams. Outside work he enjoys tabletop games, homelab projects and time with his family.

Daniel Bogisch

Daniel is a finance professional with a deep passion for technology and innovation. He uses financial data to surface insights across the business, with a particular interest in where finance meets strategy, forecasting and planning. Outside work he stays active outdoors, especially running, tennis and skiing.

Víctor Igualada

Víctor is a software engineer passionate about automation, and about outdoor sports like climbing and surfing.

Andrew McMillan

Andrew is a Technical Program Manager with a delightfully chaotic career spanning gaming, hosting, data centers, HR analytics and sales ops. He specializes in finding the bits of organizational process that are quietly on fire, fixing them, and making everyone involved feel better about it. Outside work he has a wife & three teenage kids and an alarming number of Proxmox nodes.

Dejan Dolenc

Dejan is a software engineer who can't resist tinkering, whether that means building something new in the workshop, perfecting an experimental style of stew, or adding yet another self-hosted service to his home server. Home automation lets him bring all of that together under one roof. When he's not at a keyboard, you'll find him on a hiking trail or out sailing, ideally with his dog along for the adventure.

Tabita Luis

Tabita has spent fifteen years building the people function at startups, scaleups, and global corporations across Latin America, the US, and Europe. At Nabu Casa she looks after everything people and culture, nurturing the distributed team making the Open Home a reality. Outside work she enjoys nature, live music and long walks with her dog.

Maximiliano Pena-Roig

Maxi helps support users with Nabu Casa products, but has always had a fascination with computers and electronic devices, specifically the domotics field, 'Smart Homes' as normal people call it. He has long dreamed of a 'Star Trek' dwelling, has built a home that changes its color temperature with the sun, and has screens all around to quickly adjust any device.

Gordon Cameron

Gordon was a mild-mannered local government comms officer until he discovered Home Assistant in 2016. A few innocent smart bulbs quickly spiraled into a fully automated home of the future. A former energy-tech comms lead, he now champions local, private smart homes at Nabu Casa.

Shay Redmond

Shay has been taking things apart to understand how they work for as long as he can remember. He's used Home Assistant since 2018, and today his whole home runs hands-free, relying on motion sensors, automation and voice control. He's combining that DIY curiosity with 13 years in product management to help improve Home Assistant Link and Home Assistant hardware.

Tom Quilty

Tom leads Nabu Casa's distribution and go-to-market strategy, helping the company grow sustainably. He brings more than 15 years of e-commerce experience, scaling brands big and small. He's currently studying for an MBA alongside his day job. Outside work, he's a committed audiophile and a part-time vinyl DJ at weekends — so yes, he has opinions about your speakers.

Horacio Gonzalez

Horacio is a software engineer and graduate computer science student who basically treats his apartment like a high-security sci-fi bunker. Convinced he needed to escape the matrix and reclaim his home's privacy, he discovered Home Assistant, and now refuses to let a lightbulb turn on without scripting a custom automation for it first.

Eduardo Lourenço

Eduardo leads Supply Chain at Nabu Casa, drawing on 8 years of experience scaling operations. He ensures production and logistics run seamlessly, so Home Assistant hardware makes its way from the factory floor to smart homes worldwide.

Zoltan Szekely

Zoltan is a technical writer with a focus on quality — he writes words, validates flows, and asks a lot of questions. Outside work he drinks unnecessary amounts of tea, plays the drums, and makes noodles.

Javier Torres

Javier started using Home Assistant when trying to set up a "smart home" without giving up privacy. After creating DIY hardware for his own home for years, he joined Nabu Casa in order to help build hardware for everyone. Outside of work you are likely to find him playing board games with his family or reading a book.

Kristian Wightwick

Kris is Nabu Casa's Digital Marketing Manager. He found Home Assistant in 2022 trying to run his home privately, and it grew into a self-hosted homelab with more automations than one house needs. He brings fifteen years of web, marketing and SEO. Outside work he is a hobby woodturner and 3D printer.
